A U.S. Marine pilot parachuted to safety from his F-35 Lightning II jet fighter over North Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon, but the jet remains missing.

The pilot, who has not been identified, was taken to a local medical center and is in stable condition. It is unclear why the pilot needed to eject.

Based on the jet’s last-known position, the military is focusing its search on an area around Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion. The public is being asked to call the Joint Base Charleston Base Defense Operations Center if they have any information about the missing jet.
